The subject of this Study is to inspect the change and characteristic of word list for basic vocabulary in the education of modern Japanese. Hence, this study deals with the problem how the basic vocabulary for education of modern Japanese has chosen according to the times, based on sakamotoitirou kyouikukihongoi and shinkyouikukihongoi . The common word list, additional word list and excluded word list are analyzed with the semantic distribution of bunruigoihyou in the aspect of the change of lexicon of basic vocabulary. On the base of it, it is remarkable that there is an addition of foreign words in kyouikukihongoi . It is closely related to the additional selection of vocabulary regarding necessities of life like food, clothing and house, considering the westernization of life style of people, as well as the introduction of names of objects and technical terms. Moreover, it is observed that there is a large increase of foreign words related to metal activities of human in the education for Middle school students. The stage of middle school is the linking stage to the adult education for cultural subjects and major fields of studies in universities, whereas the stages of the lower grades only needs the basic vocabulary regarding the everyday life. In conclusion, it is shown that the change and characteristic of kyouikukihongoi in modern Japanese leads the more effective education with the reduction of words and the addition of foreign words in the education reflects the westernizing life style of people.
